Newport parkrun Roster

We have now activated the roster on our mini-site within the main parkrun website

http://www.parkrun.org...wport/volunteer

This is updated directory from our parkrun computer.

The job descriptions below give you a better idea of whats needed.

If you'd like to help please choose a job and a date and email us at newportoffice@parkrun.com You can use this form if you like. If it's your first time we suggest marshalling at Naughty Corner, Caravan Corner or tail runner. We'll get back to you with a confirmation.

Whatever you choose, you'll get lots of support. We'll never over-stretch you but if you would like to try a more demanding job, perhaps like time-keeping, we'll sort you out a buddy who's done it before to ease you into it. If you have done a job like time-keeping or barcoding before then we would particularly like to see you back as you've developed a useful skill that can realy help us run the event more easily.

We meet at about 8:20 at the start line. It doesn't actually take 40 minutes to setup but something might happen that takes a bit longer. Most of the time we usually end up standing around talking. After, most volunteers head to the Brewhouse for Tea, Coffee etc.

Job Descriptions

Event Director

The Event Director oversees all aspects of organisation and safety at a particular event. They are generally the first to arrive and the last to leave.

They bring the race kit and organise the volunteers for the day.  They do a status safety check and then do the race briefing with the megaphone mentioning anything new for the day eg slippery bits, course changes. They check that the marshals are all ready and that the timekeeper is set to record the start. They sound the hooter to start the event. At the end they gather all the kit together.

Time Keeper

The Timekeeper uses the timer clock to record the finish times. They usually do a little test run thorugh just the check the timer is ok. Together with the race director they reset and clear last weeks results before setting the timer ready for the 'go'. At the start they press the timer to record the start when the hooter is sounded. They stand of the finish line and record each finisher by pressing the button on the timer. It's not complicated but it does require concentration for about 30 minues. It's best not to talk to anyone when you're doing this job. It's an important job but we record all the finishers on a video comera so if there are any mistakes (and there are some, hey we're all human) we can just review the video and fix the problem when we're having a coffee after the event in the Brewhouse doing the results.

Number Handout Marshal

Anyone who's ever done a parkrun will know they receive a barcode token for their finish place at the end of the race. The Number Handout Marshal is the person who gives them out. It's a simple job. As people finish you just hand them the next tag. The marshal needs to check the sequence of tags is correct before the start so you need to be able to count up to 250

Barcode Scanners marshals

Any parkrunner knows that you need to get your personal barcode and your position barcode scanned at the end of the event. This is the job of the Barcode Scanner Marshals. It's very simple. You just point the scanner at the barcode and press the button. You might need to adjust the angle when you scan but you can have a test play before you start. It only takes a half dozen tries to get the hang of it. You need to scan the athlete barcode first then the position barcode. You then hand back the athlete barcode to the runner for next time and keep our position barcode.

If any of the barcodes don't scan or if someone forgets their barcode, one of the marshals needs to make a note of it in our little note book so we can type it into the computer when we do the results in the Brewhouse after the event.

We need two barcode marshals. The lead marshal will have done the job before and acts as a mentor for the other barcoder.

The timekeeper, Number handout marshal and the barcode marshals all help setup the start flag and the end tapes. It only takes 5 minutes.

Naughty Corner Marshals

This is the point on the course where, after about 500m, the runners first turn left to start the two full laps and finally turn left to return down to the finish. It's at the far end of the park near the big Tredegar Park roundabout. We call it Naughty Corner because Kelly said being sent up there was like being sent to sit on the naughty step when she was a kiddy (which I suspect was often).

You need to setout a couple of direction signs and a bit of tape before the start and take it down at the end. There are a pair of km markers, 1 and 3, to be set up in the woods. This job is about directing the runners around the course but, quite frankly, most of them know where to go. You have to be a bit alert as we sometimes get a parkrun bagger (someone who runs each venue just once in an attempt to cover the whole country) and they might be a bit focused on their running effort rather than the course and run on to a 3rd lap!

Car Park Marshal and Tail Runner

This marshal starts out in the car park at about 8:30 before the start at 9am. They are there to generally help arrivals. Perhaps there are new parkrunners who don't know what to do and need some assistance, directions and explanation. One important thing at Tredegar House is that we don't need to pay parking in the meters so if you can spot anyone before they pop the coins in it's nice. At about 10 minutes to 9 you need to hurry up anyone still in the carpark and get them to the startline. You'll be given a first aid kit - not to give first aid yourself but to offer it to anyone who needs it to use themselves. You'll need a mobile phone and you'll be given the Event Director phone number to report and incidents/accidents as you run/walk round after the last runner.

Caravan Corner Marshals

These are positioned over near the kids playground and the entrance to the caravan park. We've never had a problem but you'll be there to give support and just keep and eye on things. There are two km markers - 1 and 3 that need to be put up in the woods and taken down at the end.
