Newport's friendly running club.

Beginners Home Page

We were all beginers....once!

So we know what you're probably thinking.......

"I like running, but I'm too slow for a running club"

"Running clubs are for good runners. I wouldn't be able to keep up"

"There will be no one running at my speed"

This is a normal reaction to the suggestion to join a running club but it's WRONG!

Many of our beginners have commented that they would have joined long before if they had realised how friendly a running club could be.

We give the help ...you do the rest!

We have teamed up with Newport City Council to give EVERYONE a chance to start running

Every Saturday we organise the Newport parkrun (http://www.parkrun.org.uk/newport/home). This is ideal start for absolute beginners. It is no problem to walk all of the 5km (just over 3 miles) course in the beautiful grounds of Tredegar House. Just get your peronal barcode from this website to show at the end of the race to allow us to record your time. You will get lots of support and encouragement and soon get hooked. Eventually when you can run all the way you will be wanting to know how to go faster.

Our weekly interval sessions on Wednesdays. We meet in the reception area of the Tennis Centre at 6:30pm. Often have up to 40 runners of all ages and abilities running short distances (repetitions) with rests in between. Sessions are designed by UKA Qualified Coach, Chris to be scaled to all abilities. Chris or coach of the day will explain the session and put everyone in a suitable group.

New starters are put into groups with people of the same ability.

There's always one group of absolute beginners, ususally looked after by Julia, one of our UKA Qualified "Leaders In Running Fitness". As you become more confident you can move yourself up the groups. What to expect It's never a problem to take extra rests if you wish. We want you to enjoy it. There will be lots of encouragement and you will feel like an old timer at the end of the first session.

You will be able to get friendly & helpful advice about shoes, kit, stretching, warm up/warm down and how to build up your speed and distance

Don't worry if you miss any sessions. By working together in groups, you will always be with someone of the same standard.

Recommended Kit: Come ready to run in comfortable clothing and running shoes. It is also advisable to bring warm clothes and/or waterproof jackets for warm up and cool down. Please make sure you wear bright clothing for the evening sessions.

Note: Shower and changing is available and a Café for hot and cold snacks, cold drinks, teas, great coffee etc - all in Newport Tennis Centre. For anyone needing something stronger there's a growing group who end up in the bar!
