Yvonne’s Blog - 1 year on
Do you remember the race for life 2007? A wetsuit and fins would have been more suitable attire than shorts and trainers. Still, many of us tried to enter into the spirit of the event and did a “warm up” to “singing in the rain”. I didn’t want to be defeated by the weather and paddled around the course in about 35 minutes – not too bad I thought after all I had been going to the gym and running around the block for about four months.
As I paddled back to the car someone gave me a leaflet which I stuffed into my goodie bag being only interested in getting home for a shower at that time. When I had dried out – about three days later – I read the leaflet – Lliswerry Runners – Newport’s Friendly Running Club – All ages and abilities welcome.
Does that include me, I wondered. I’m a mature woman, I don’t look like a runner and I can’t go that far before I’m out of puff. Despite my efforts to train on my own in the gym I was only making slow progress. When I finished a run on my own, I frequently felt disappointed with my progress or lack of it. I was usually training on my own. I have friends who are both more and less fit than me but nobody about the same standard.
Looking back I can see that I didn’t have a plan, I wasn’t having much fun and I was not really making much progress to my goal of running a half-marathon or further. In fact, I didn’t really like to mention it to anyone in case I got laughed at.
Well, I thought, they’ve given me this leaflet – not just say the first 100 finishers – everyone who attended this event – they didn’t know if I was first or last – just that I had attempted to run 5k. And there’s a female name & number to call – I’ll give them a call. And would you Adam and Eve it – Answering Machine – I left my name and number and very soon I was called back with information and encouragement and I started to join some of the training sessions.
And now a year has gone by. I’ve run 10k without stopping! I’ve learned to run up hills (so long as they’re not too big and well disguised). I’ve learned to pace myself (I’m still working on this but much better than I used to be). I ran the Cardiff Half-Marathon and the Llanelli Half-Marathon. I intend to run the Bristol Half-Marathon in September 2008 and the Cardiff Half in October 2008.
I enjoy all the elements of the training, the sessions where everyone trains together even though abilities vary. I enjoy the tempo runs, definitely the chatty runs and all the events that both test progress and spur you on to trying a bit harder. I know my training is a lot more productive than it used to be and what’s best is that it’s great fun.
The club is what is says on the leaflet, it’s very friendly and there’s great training sessions. So if you want to improve your running and have fun. Give us a ring and come and join us.

Kelly's Blog-almost one year on!
Hi- my story starts the same as Yvonne's- where after coming third in my third race for life, I discovered their leaflet that I had stuck in my bag. Prior to this I had been doing circuit training three-four times a week and going to the gym. Towards the end of my first year of Uni I decided I wanted to get fitter and run- so entered my first race for life....I then I started running with a group of ladies from Risca on a Saturday morning and my mate on a Tuesday- I was doing this for about 2 years.
Gradually I managed to extend my milleage and even entered for a few races including the Celtic Manor 10k race, Scenic 7 and the Lliswerry 8!!! However I soon felt that I wanted a new challenge and as lovely as the ladies were I often found myself running off ahead and waiting or running alone.... I had often seen the Maroon and white army at a few races and thought about joining but didnt think I would be good enough or that it would be too much commitment with Uni and work.
I can still remember my first run with the club from the Canals at 14 locks...as I pulled up in my car I could see all these people in running gear stretching and jogging about!!!!...I need not have worried as it was a great success from the start-everyone was so friendly and I easily slotted in with a group of runners of the same level .
....That was nearly a year ago now!!!...since then I have had the plessure of running many races, tackling cross country, road running, hill training, speed training, relay races and have not only increased my speed, and milleage...but I have also made a whole new circle of friends....all this and it slots in perfectly with my hectic routine!
It was also thanks to the club I securred a place in The London 2008 Flora Marathon after being declined from my own ballot entry. The club were fantastic with my training and gave me sooo much help, info and advice prior to it...and were even there on the day cheering me on!!!
Since wearing my maroon and white vest I havent looked back and am proud to be a member of this local club-If your thinking of a local club...I can strongly recommend us!!!
